The Equinox Resort ReviewUnder new ownership, the venerable Equinox is changing, yet remains a longtime blueblood (and wedding-party) favorite; its white clapboard and stately columns define Manchester Village. The place's roots date to 1769, but don't be misled: This is a full-blown and modern resort, complete with a full-service spa, lovely indoor pool, scenic golf course, and extensive sports facilities. Rooms are tastefully appointed, if not terribly large, and are being updated as we go to press. The resort recently acquired the nearby 1811 House, one of the best B&Bs in the state; it offers cozy rooms with authentically uneven pine floors and antique furniture, and is also being modernized. Suites in the adjacent Charles Orvis Inn are big and modern, with use of a private billiards room included. A bonus: The resort offers plenty of activities on its 1,300-plus acres of grounds, such as skeet shooting, falconry, and guided hikes up Mount Equinox. Handling Birds of a Feather -- The Equinox Resort offers a variety of activities, ranging from archery to off-road driving, but one of the most interesting experiences you can have here is handling and flying a bird of prey at the British School of Falconry. Trained falconers give participants an up-close-and-personal look at these beautiful raptors, mostly Harris hawks, with programs ranging from an introductory lesson ($89 for 45 min.) to a half-day hunt ($299). Participants must be at least 12 years old. For more information, call tel. 802/362-4780; or e-mail falconry@equinoxresort.com. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
