Planning a Trip

Getting There -- Trains connect Chur and Arosa at the rate of one per hour during the day (trip time: 1 hr.). Trains from Zurich take 3 hours to reach Arosa. Call tel. 0900/300-300 for rail information and schedules. Zurich is the nearest airport to Arosa.

If you're driving the 31km (19-mile) drive from Chur in good weather, allow at least an hour, as the road is steep, with hairpin curves. Don't make the drive in icy weather. Instead, take the narrow-gauge railway, which has been in operation since World War I.

Visitor Information -- Poststrasse is the main traffic artery through the center of town; visitors can follow hotel and restaurant directional signs. The tourist office is on Poststrasse (tel. 081/378-70-20; www.arosa.ch), and is open Monday to Friday 8am to noon and 1:30 to 6pm, Saturday 9am to 1pm and 2 to 6pm, and Sunday 9am to noon.

Getting Around -- Every night in Arosa, between midnight and 6am, most cars are forbidden from moving within the resort's center, with the exception of taxis and Night Express buses , which make scheduled runs through the town center, stopping at the parking areas that flank the periphery of the resort. The most consistent of the night buses operates only in wintertime. Known as the "Night Express" (call the tourist office for information), it's a minivan service that runs continually from 8pm to 2am between December and April, charging 4F ($3.30/£1.70) per person per ride anywhere along its trajectory. The vehicles are marked NIGHT EXPRESS and can be stopped for boarding or getting off anywhere along the way.
