The alpine village of Arthur's Pass is 2 hours from Christchurch and your halfway mark to the West Coast. You can also go by train on the TranzAlpine or by shuttle with West Coast Shuttles (tel. 03/768-0028; www.westcoastshuttle.co.nz). Another option is a 1-day tour from Christchurch with Travel Pioneer (tel. 0800/808-070 in NZ) or Peninsula & Alpine Tours (tel. 03/384-3576; fax 03/384-3971). The only daily afternoon service is provided by Alpine Coaches (tel. 0800/274-888 in NZ). Visitor Information The Arthur's Pass Visitor Centre, State Highway (73 Main Rd.), P.O. Box 51008, Arthur's Pass (tel. 03/318-9211; fax 03/318-9093; www.doc.govt.nz), is a good place to start. The weather in this area can be extremely changeable -- never underestimate the danger; people can die when they are ill-prepared and ignore warnings. The center staff will be able to advise you on all safety issues related to walking tracks. Open daily, except December 25.
