Frommer's Review
If you came to town for Giotto's frescoes, you can do no better than this hotel, which opened next to the basilica in 1860. Accommodations in this former 16th-century palazzo vary widely in color scheme, decor, size, and appointments. The only real consistencies are the owners' pleasing tendency to fill each room with antiques and the fact that rooms overlooking the valley or the facade of San Francesco are larger, better furnished, and all-around nicer -- insist on one. Bathrooms were recently overhauled. The Umbrian restaurant is partly installed in a 13th-century vaulted cellar. For tradition (Bette Davis, Alec Guinness, and the king of Bulgaria all lodged here) and the location just 100 paces from the basilica, the Subasio's a prime choice.

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
