The odd, stone, pointed Gothic arch and a few other architectural elements remain from the collection of 13th-century houses from which the Umbra was converted. The carpets in the large-ish whitewashed rooms support agreeable old furniture like 19th-century dressers, 18th-century desks, and 17th-century armoires. Many rooms have views over the rooftops and valley, some have balconies, and the hotel is tucked with little hidden panoramic terraces. The bathrooms are sheathed in marble or feature brass fixtures. Ask to see the basement kitchen and laundry rooms, where the town's Roman walls make up part of the foundations. The restaurant is well regarded for its Umbrian food and makes use not only of the standard black truffles but also of Gubbio's rare white variety when in season. In summer, the tables are moved out onto a terrace for lamplit dinners in a pretty vine-shaded garden. Half pension is available for an additional 23€ ($30) per person.
