Frommer's Review
Mondo Baking is a casual retro-style cafe/dessert bakery with excellent coffee and an impressive array of periodicals for sale. It has built a solid base of customers who enjoy good food and appreciate lingering -- you won't be hurried along, even if you only come in to nurse a cup of coffee or browse the magazines (at least 200 different publications).
Everything is made with a creative twist, from the prosciutto and brie sandwich, studded with chopped dates and dressed with peppery arugula, to the lemon love bars. Bowing to less sophisticated tastes, there's PB&J and grilled cheese for the kids. Monday through Friday mornings feature breakfast sandwiches and fresh baked goods such as strawberry-lemon or plum-cardamom scones. Breakfast is bigger and better on Saturday, when it's served until noon. There's always a blue-plate special, homemade granola, and a vegetarian omelet -- perhaps with brie, roasted yellow peppers, and onions.
