Frommer's Review
With cuisine inspired by that of the Latin Caribbean and South America, plus some Spanish influences thrown in for good measure, Pura Vida is the best tapas eatery in the city. Among the tasty $6-a-plate offerings designed to share are the empanada de picadillao de pollo. Translated, that would be turnovers stuffed with chicken, olives, capers, raisins, and diced eggs served with chile-sugar cane vinegar. Another popular plate is the Ponce de Leon -- 18-month cured Serrano ham, Spanish chorizo, and olives. Pura Vida also offers an extensive wines-by-the-glass menu, as well as specialty drinks such as "Sex in Santiago," its version of a Cosmopolitan. Folks come here not only to eat, but also to enjoy the activities of the Pura Vida Social Club: On Fiesta Friday, patrons can join in dancing the salsa, mambo, and merengue or just sit back and enjoy the sights. Some nights, the city's dramatic tango community performs the Argentine tango while guests enjoy Argentine wines. Monday nights feature mojitos and dominos (I hear the game is making a comeback). The atmosphere is fun, but if you're not up for noisy crowds, plan to dine early.
