Franklin Barbecue ReviewLook for a blue-and-white trailer parked at the back of a fenced vacant lot on the northbound feeder road of I-35. Aaron and Stacy Franklin have been serving food out of this trailer since winter 2010, and word of their old-style barbecue has spread like wildfire. Aaron cooks it for 18 hours, using a low-temperature oak fire. The problem is that until he finds a bigger smoker (which you can see in a second trailer standing behind the first), he sells out of meat by 1pm or so. The popularity is well founded. The ribs, brisket, and sausage taste very much like the small-town barbecue outside of Austin. And, if you don't want to drive that far, but want to sample traditional barbecue, you should schedule a trip here. Franklin also has a couple of twists: pulled pork, which is uncommon here, and an espresso-flavored bbq sauce in addition to a traditional one. The lot has a few picnic tables where you can enjoy the food. Also, you should check the website for changes; Aaron tells me that he's looking to move out of the trailer and into a full kitchen. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
