The Adams House ReviewMonroe Shipe, the developer of Hyde Park, designed his homes to be both attractive and affordable to the middle class. This B&B honors Shipe's egalitarian spirit. Built as a single-story bungalow and expanded into a two-story colonial revival in 1931, it was restored in the 1990s by a preservation architect. The house is beautifully furnished and has a friendly, open feel due to its 12-foot ceilings. Innkeepers Liz Lock and Eric Hughes are friendly and helpful and are happy to make suggestions for your stay. All the rooms are lovely, but the nicest is the suite with a king-size four-poster bed and a sun porch with a foldout couch. A separate house out back doesn't have as much character, but compensates with a TV/VCR and Jacuzzi. The house's location in leafy Hyde Park is not only attractive and restful, but is quite practical, as it is just a block away from a small neighborhood center that includes a small grocery, coffee bar, laundromat ("washateria" in Texas), and a few superb local restaurants. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
