Frommer's Review
Since 1866, when councilman August Scholz first opened his tavern near the state capitol, every Texas governor has visited it at least once (and many quite a few more times). In recent years, Texas's oldest operating biergarten was sold to the owners of the popular Green Mesquite BBQ, giving it new life. The extensive menu now combines barbecue favorites with traditional bratwurst and sauerkraut, a state-of-the-art sound system cranks out the polka tunes, and patio tables as well as a few strategically placed TV sets help Longhorn fans cheer on their team -- a Scholz's tradition in and of itself. All in all, a great place to drink in some Austin history.
