The Sheraton, located along Interstate 35 on the edge of Waller Creek, offers good rates and many extras that make it a solid choice for business and vacation travelers alike. Renovated in the fall of 2013, this Sheraton is particularly nice because it sits just five blocks east of the Texas State Capitol. It's not far from all the fun downtown, although that might be something of a hike in summer when temperatures hover around 100 degrees. University of Texas parents and alumni appreciate its proximity to campus. The hotel is entered through a soaring glass-walled atrium, allowing for a sunny, open feel to the space, and a bright, welcoming lobby. With all the amenities you'd expect from a nice Sheraton, this property also has an indoor/outdoor pool that backs up to Waller Creek. Large oak trees edge the pool, providing welcome shade from the hot Texas sun. Above the pool, sunbathers enjoy a deck connected to the hotel restaurant. An on-site Starbucks will please those who count on their favorite caffeinated brew to start the day. Rooms on the two club floor levels are a good value, as they offer a continental breakfast, evening snacks and drinks, and a full business center with a private concierge lounge. The rooms, which in 2013 were renovated with all new bedding, linens, carpets, and wallpaper, are of good size, and offer views of downtown or the University campus. This Sheraton has only four suites, and they are generally not offered to the public except in special circumstances. One of the things I like best about this hotel is that it is located near the Red River Street music district, not far from Stubb's and Emo's East, two venerated Austin clubs that are fun all year round. The Sheraton sits just off Interstate 35, so if you're driving into Austin, it's easy to find.
