50km (31 miles) S of Munich

The historic spa town of Bad Tölz offers something for every traveler. Situated where the rolling foothills become the mountains of the Alps, the town flanks both sides of the Isar River, which divides it into two distinct sectors. On the eastern side of the river stands the historic medieval town, complete with chapels, turrets, and walls. Older than Munich, this section offers fine examples of medieval and baroque art and architecture. The major attraction here is Stadtpfarrkirche, a church built in 1466 -- it's an exquisite example of German late-Gothic architecture.

On the western bank of the Isar lies the Kurverwaltung, or modern spa, whose iodine-rich waters are known for their soothing and healing powers.
