The old, established spa of Bad Hofgastein (elevation 869m/2,851 ft.) has long been a rival of Badgastein for the tourist euro. It's smaller than Badgastein but almost as charming. The little resort is actually almost a satellite of the larger spa, as the radioactive waters of Badgastein are pumped to its neighbor. Some hardy visitors like to follow a marked footpath on the 2 1/2-hour walk between the two towns. The two resorts welcome almost as many visitors as Salzburg.
