Frommer's Review

Where in the 1970s the former Erawan Hotel famously stood, the hulking white Grand Hyatt was built a decade or so ago. For a time, this was the hotel for hosting visiting dignitaries. Today it still exudes comfort, convenience, and style, though perhaps not such exclusive status. It also enjoys a great central (if smog-bound) location: pool loungers and residents of the new, delightful spa cottages are regularly looked over by commuters on the BTS. The hotel's design epitomizes the glamour and exuberance of the 1980s, with giant columns and staircases reminiscent of the TV show Dynasty. The lobby (which has Wi-Fi) and its lush indoor landscaping is a cool contrast to the throbbing noise outside on the city's busiest intersection. Spacious rooms are decked out in delightful silks, celadon ceramics, pseudo-antique furnishings, and parquet floors. The bathrooms are equally generous, and city views abound. Isawan, the exclusive spa floor, comes with an excellent New York-style nail salon and superbly crafted surroundings, a mix of modernity and cool Zen simplicity. Rooms have Internet access and compact control panels. In the basement, there are good dining options including fine Italian, a more casual noodle cafe, and a luxury patisserie. Next door is the opulent Erawan shopping center, with high-end outlets such as Mulberry and Burberry, as well as a top-floor colonics center and Urban Kitchen, a basement food hall for cheap eats. Just a few meters away is the glittering Erawan shrine (built to ward off the bad luck that seemed to plague the new hotel during its construction).

Facilities: 8 restaurants; lounge; night club; pool; tennis court; fitness center; spa; nail salon; tour desk; airport transfer; 24-hr. business center; shopping arcade; salon; 24-hr. room service; babysitting; same-day laundry service/dry cleaning; nonsmoking rooms; executive floor.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
