Harkers Island -- If you're a boat owner, you can tie up across the sound from Beaufort at Calico Jack's Marina (tel. 252/728-3575) on Harkers Island. If you don't have a boat, a ferry (tel. 800/BY-FERRY [293-3779]; www.ncdot.org) leaves from Calico Jack's for the 35-minute trip to Cape Lookout. The ferry runs between April and December, and the fare is $10 for adults and $6 for children 6 and under. A jitney service between Cape Point and the lighthouse moves visitors from one spot to another. Bring a picnic, insect repellent, and your own water supply. The island's atmosphere is ideal for those who like sailboats, lots of sun, and miles of sandy beaches. It's also a good venue for fishing and beachcombing. The unique diamond-patterned lighthouse has stood here since 1859.
