Performing Arts

Beersheva is justifiably proud of its Israel Sinfonietta (tel. 08/623-1616), which performs throughout the country. Tickets are by subscription, but you may be able to buy a ticket before the performance at the box office. The concerts start promptly at 8:30pm. Concerts are also given by the Beersheva Music Conservatory's Chamber Orchestra (tel. 08/627-6019). Many superb musicians perform with these groups. The Beersheva Theater performs at Bet Ha-Am, in the Hever Community Center, the large white building in Gan Moshe Park. Performances are usually in Hebrew only. Check with the Tourist Information Office (tel. 08/623-4613) for current programs. Tickets are approximately NIS 120 ($30/£15).

Pubs & Cafes

Beersheva has a number of cozy, constantly changing pubs that spring up and close down, especially on the southern side of Old Town. Stroll around Trumpeldor and Smilansky streets and the little lanes of the neighborhood, listen to the music, and see the lights flood the streets from the open doors. Hatzer Ha-Yayin Wine Bar (tel. 08/623-8135), in the Artists Quarter, is the classiest place around, serving wine and tapas at a pace that works well with quiet conversation.
