Saga Youth Hostel (Shijia Guoji Qingnian Lushe)

Housed in one of Beijing's most famous hutong, the Saga is a favorite among savvy backpackers. The decade-old hostel just underwent a long-overdue renovation and looks fresh and lively. The second-floor hallway has been painted a sunny yellow on top of which stylish Chinese calligraphy in heavy gold paint has been added. The ceiling is brightly painted with scenes from Chinese folklore. Spacious standard rooms come with their own wet bathrooms (the kind with no divider between the toilet and the shower); some rooms have separate sitting areas. The third floor, home to clean and functional dorm rooms, is much more utilitarian hostel in style and decoration. Past visitors have scribbled their thoughts in kaleidoscopic ink and paint on the hallway's white walls. The ratty public bathrooms have thankfully been replaced with clean blue tile, separate cubicles, and showerheads offering decent pressure. The biggest bonus of top-floor accommodations is proximity to the third-floor balcony; the fantastic view west across well-preserved old courtyard houses is a joy, especially at sunrise. There's also a central courtyard on the main floor with cozy patio furniture and sun umbrellas.
