In Sunriver -- The resort community of Sunriver is Oregon's most popular summer destination resort and has hundreds of condos, cabins, and vacation homes at a wide range of prices. Sunset Realty (tel. 877/864-9767 or 541/593-5018; www.sr-sunset.com) is one of the area's biggest rental companies.
Campgrounds
The closest campground to Bend is Tumalo State Park, 5 miles northwest of Bend off U.S. 20. The biggest campground in the area is La Pine State Park, which is accessible from U.S. 97 between Sunriver and La Pine. Reservations can be made at these parks through Reserve America (tel. 800/452-5687; www.reserveamerica.com).
Of the many campgrounds along the Cascade Lakes Highway, the walk-in Todd Lake Campground, 25 miles west of Bend, is my favorite because it is enough of a walk from the parking lot to keep things pretty quiet. Devil's Lake Campground, also a walk-in campground, is another favorite of mine. Farther south, there are lots of campgrounds on the many lakes along this road. Two of my favorites are the Mallard Marsh and South campgrounds, both of which are on beautiful Hosmer Lake. The campgrounds at Lava Lake and Little Lava Lake are also fairly quiet, and the view from Lava Lake is the finest at any campground on this stretch of road.
