Choosing a Route 7--When driving through here, remember that there are two Route 7s. Running high along the foothills is the newer Route 7, with its limited access and higher speeds, enabling a speedy and scenic trip up the valley toward Rutland. There are only a few exits onto and off this highway. If you're in a hurry -- or want to see expansive views of foliage without any buildings -- take this route. Meandering along the valley floor, on the other hand, is Historic Route 7A, a more leisurely road with plenty of diversions, including antiques shops, towns, outlet stores, farm stands, historic buildings, and a covered bridge. Both are nice; choose according to your mood.
Getting There -- Bennington is at the intersection of Routes 9 and 7. If you're coming from the south, the nearest interstate access is via the New York Thruway at Albany, about 35 miles away. From the east, I-91 is about 40 miles away at Brattleboro. Vermont Transit (tel. 800/642-3133 or 802/442-4808; www.vermonttransit.com) offers bus service to Bennington from Albany, Burlington, and other points. Buses arrive and depart from 126 Washington St.
Visitor Information -- The Bennington Area Chamber of Commerce, 100 Veterans Memorial Dr. (tel. 800/229-0252 or 802/447-3311; www.bennington.com), has an information office on Route 7 North near the veterans' complex. The office is open Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm mid-May through mid-October; in summer and fall, it's also open Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm.
