The Frangipani Review

This local favorite of yachties is a great hangout, its ambience created by James Mitchell, longtime prime minister of the island chain. The core of this pleasant guesthouse originated as the home of a 19th-century sea captain. Since it was transformed into a hotel, it has added accommodations that border a sloping tropical garden in back. The complex overlooks the island's historic harbor, Admiralty Bay. The five rooms in the original house are smaller and much less glamorous (and less expensive) than the better-outfitted accommodations in the garden. The garden units are handcrafted from local stone and hardwoods, and have tile floors, carpets of woven hemp, wooden furniture (some made on St. Vincent), and balconies.

Guests can play tennis or arrange scuba dives, sailboat rides, or other watersports nearby. The nearest scuba outfitter, Dive Adventures, is fully accredited by PADI (tel. 784/458-3826; www.bequiadiveadventures.com).

Facilities:
Restaurant; bar; babysitting; limited room service; tennis court; boating; nearby dive shop; private yacht charter

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
