Hotel San Lorenzo

This stylish place in Bergamo Alta is located in a former convent building of Santa Agata. The centuries-old setting is tailor-made for this unusually pleasant inn -- most of the rooms face a courtyard and open through French doors to a balcony that wraps around it. Though the hotel is right in town, just a few steps off Via Colleoni, its hillside location provides views over the green slopes flowing down to the valley below. The rooms are small but comfortable, with striped silk draperies and bed coverings and cane-backed lounge chairs; the marble bathrooms come with hand-held shower massagers and hair dryers. A sumptuous buffet breakfast is served in the breakfast room. The discovery of Roman ruins put the brakes on construction of an underground parking facility, though the hotel provides a permit allowing you to park for free in the adjoining square.
