  • ca. 1503 Juan Bermúdez discovers Bermuda while sailing aboard the Spanish ship La Garza.

  • 1609 The British ship Sea Venture is wrecked on the reefs of Bermuda; all onboard make it to shore safely and the settlement of Bermuda begins.

  • 1612 The Virginia Company dispatches the Plough to Bermuda with 60 colonists onboard. Richard Moore is appointed governor of Bermuda.

  • 1620 The first Bermuda parliament session is held in St. Peter's Church, St. George.

  • 1684 The British Crown takes over the Bermuda Company's charter. Sir Robert Robinson is appointed the Crown's first governor of Bermuda.

  • 1775 Gunpowder is stolen in St. George and shipped to the American colonies for use against the British.

  • 1861 Bermuda becomes involved in the American Civil War when it runs supplies to the South to undermine the Union's blockade.

  • 1919-33 Bermudians profit from Prohibition in the United States by engaging in rum-running.

  • 1940-45 Bermuda plays an important role in World War II counterespionage for the Allies.

  • 1946 The automobile is introduced on Bermuda.

  • 1957 Great Britain withdraws military from Bermuda after 2 centuries of rule.

  • 1963 Voter registration is open to all citizens.

  • 1968 Bermudians are granted a new constitution that, while protecting them under the umbrella of the British Commonwealth, allows them to govern themselves.

  • 1973 The governor, Sir Richard Sharples, and an aide are assassinated.

  • 1979 Bermudians celebrate as their own Gina Swainson wins the Miss World contest.

  • 1987 Hurricane Emily causes millions of dollars' worth of damage; some 70 people are injured.

  • 1990-91 Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher and John Major confer with President George H. W. Bush in Bermuda.

  • 1995 Bermudians vote to maintain traditional ties with Britain.

  • 1997 Pamela Gordon, 41, becomes the island's first female prime minister.

  • 1998 The Labour Party sweeps into power with another female prime minister.

  • 2000 It's announced that 75% of U.S. Fortune 500 companies make Bermuda their home port.

  • 2003 Bermuda launches its quincentennial celebrations; Hurricane Fabian devastates the island.

  • 2004 Bermuda hoteliers launch massive restorations in the wake of Fabian. Prime Minister Tony Blair makes an Easter visit.

  • 2007 Bermuda fears new passport requirements will lead to drop-off in U.S. visitors.
