Not as refined, but also not as stuffy, as Horizons or Cambridge Beaches, this is one of the island's state-of-the-art inns, opening onto a private beach of pink-flecked sand surrounded by palm trees and jutting rocks.

This inn boasts top-notch maintenance, first-class personal service, and unmatched ocean views. This "lanai colony" of salmon-pink cottages on Christian Bay spreads along a low coral ridge. The lanais are cheerfully decorated in rattan and bright island colors. All have private sun decks and ocean views. These midsize accommodations have tasteful furnishings and small bathrooms with tub/shower combinations, separate dressing areas, and dual basins. The hotel offers eight "Cottage Suites by the Reefs," and these are the most desirable; they come in one-, two-, or three-bedroom units built along the cliffs and hillside of the resort and featuring the privacy of a home with the luxuries and services of a resort. If you're looking for action, consider checking into the Elbow Beach Hotel or the Fairmont Southampton. But if you want a smaller place and more tranquillity, consider one of the Reefs's relaxing pink lanais.

The attentive staff of the plant-filled Ocean Echo, the more formal dining option, serves Continental and North American cuisine. The chefs concentrate on bringing out the food's natural flavors; they don't overpower your taste buds with extra sauces and gimmicks. If you want to let your hair down a bit, opt for Coconuts; there's no finer or more romantic spot in Bermuda for an alfresco sunset dinner than this beach terrace. The chefs draw inspiration from around the world -- Thailand to the United States. The kidney-shaped swimming pool sits on a ledge with an ocean view. The latest improvement here is a spa, La Serena (serenity), offering, among other services, the only authentic Thai massage on island. There is also an array of other services ranging from reflexology to facials, and even a nonsurgical facelift.
