This deluxe cottage colony sits atop a hill overlooking Coral Beach, a 10-minute walk away. The lack of a beach on the premises might be a serious drawback for some visitors, especially at these prices. Otherwise, you'll be a pampered darling here. Bermuda's top cottage colonies -- Cambridge Beaches and Horizons -- are both popular with a well-heeled crowd. Subdued sophistication characterizes both, though Horizons is perhaps a touch less snobbish. At Horizons, families with big bank accounts predominate in summer, and there's a mature repeat clientele in winter; trust-fund honeymooners show up year-round. Sometimes the atmosphere evokes a discreet house party, with fellow guests regularly being introduced. You might find more privacy, anonymity, and seclusion at Cambridge Beaches.
Horizons and Cottages has at its core a converted manor farm (ca. 1690), where the traditional ambience remains. A Relais & Châteaux member, Horizons is situated on a 10-hectare (25-acre) estate with terraced gardens and lawns. The reception rooms of the manor house have old Bermudian architectural details, as well as antiques from England and the Continent; several drawing rooms have open fireplaces.
All guest units are handsomely furnished with Italian terra-cotta tile floors, scatter rugs, traditional tray ceilings, and ceiling fans. They have separate dressing areas and private terraces overlooking the ocean. Some units are split-level. The generous tiled bathrooms come with oversize mirrors, and tub/shower combinations.
The main dining room, the Middleton Room, serves French cuisine naturelle, using all fresh products. The food, especially the tender steak and fresh seafood dishes, is exceptional for Bermuda, although the chefs at Cambridge Beaches seem to work more magic. Lunch is served on the terrace, which is transformed into an entertainment area in the evenings, with informal dancing and, at times, calypso music. Guests can also have lunch and dinner, by reservation, at Coral Beach & Tennis Club and Waterloo House.
