Review of Historisches Museum Bern und Einstein Museum (Bern Historical Museum and Einstein Museum)

The bulk of this museum resembles a neo-Gothic castle inspired by the Swiss fortress style of the 16th century. It's a venerable and somewhat old-fashioned repository for historical relics, along with archaeological, ethnographic, and numismatic collections. One of its primary attractions is a series of seven 15th-century tapestries. A tapestry called The Thousand Flowers, plus four others telling the story of Julius Caesar, belonged to the dukes of Burgundy during the Middle Ages. A number of rural and urban rooms, filled with period furnishings and artifacts, are also open to the public. Within the larger context of the museum is a specialized sub-museum, the Einstein Museum, where books, journal entries, and an ongoing roster of videotaped news bulletins illustrate the life of one of Switzerland's most famous émigrés, who lived in Bern for a while back in 1905. Animated films and a computer-simulated "virtual journey through the cosmos" help to illuminate Einstein's theories about the relationships between physical matter, energy, and time.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
