Introduction to Bernkastel-Kues

48km (30 miles) NE of Trier, 113km (70 miles) W of Mainz

In a valley full of wine towns, Bernkastel stands out as the most colorful. Half-timbered buildings dating from as early as 1608 surround its old Marktplatz. In the center of the square stands St. Michael's Fountain, which flows with wine during the annual September wine festival. Like Traben-Trarbach, this town is split into twin villages on opposite banks of the Mosel.
