Worth noting is the restoration of a grand old North Country classic. The Mountain View Grand Resort & Spa (tel. 800/438-3017 or 603/837-2100; www.mountainviewgrand.com) in Whitefield, a short drive north of Littleton and Bethlehem, was a popular destination in the late 19th century, and grew into a sprawling resort hotel with golf course and tremendous mountain views. As with other old-fashioned summer destinations, the resort fell out of fashion and closed.
After years of abandonment, the hotel has benefited from a $20 million overhaul, including restoration of all windows, replacement of 38 miles of plumbing, and peeling away seven layers of wallpaper in guest rooms. There are 145 rooms and suites, each with a mountain view and oversized TV. The resort also includes a dining room and lounge, indoor and outdoor pools, a fitness center, a golf course, and spa offerings. Summer rates run from about $310 to $490 per double, $640 to $700 for the suites; winter rates are lower, $210 to $330 for a double and $470 to $560 for suites. Ask about packages, B&B, and MAP rates.
