Perched upon 6 rolling acres south of downtown, this 1879 Victorian hotel beguiles with its long veranda and broad views. Bedrooms are furnished mostly with antiques. Drawn by the promise of spectacular sunsets and the restaurant's changing menu of tapas, joined with the most diverse beer and wine selection on the island, people start assembling on the veranda and lawn at 4pm each summer day. President Clinton stopped by for dinner a few years ago, drawn by the reputation of the kitchen, one of the two most accomplished on Block Island. He had no trouble getting a table, it can be assumed, but the rest of us need reservations from June to September. Fish, fowl, and vegetables are smoked on the premises, and the chef comes up with such attractions as grilled striped bass with orzo salad. The inn is nonsmoking.
