Just a gated collection of crumbling stones a decade ago, today, this restored historic amphitheatre takes best advantage of its hilltop position overlooking Bodrum's twin bays with concerts lighting up the marble on summer's eves. The theatre was built by King Mausolus in the 4th century B.C. then enlarged in the 2nd century A.D. under the Romans. Some rock tombs are visible above the theatre, and a little bit of detective work will reveal inscriptions in the seats (believed to be names of those who subsidized the construction of the amphitheatre).
