Myndos Gate

After many years of neglect, Ericsson and Turkcell teamed up to restore the ancient walls of Halicarnassus (7km/4 1/3 miles' worth), including the remnants of the east-facing monumental Myndos Gate. In 333, the Myndos Gate succumbed to the armies of Alexander the Great, who then sacked the city leaving nothing but the Mausoleum. The gate was a three-towered Trippilion, of which the center tower is gone. According to Arrianus, the Greek historian, the tower was protected by a 15m (49-ft.) wide and 8m-deep (26-ft.) moat. The gate and its immediate surroundings have regrettably been colonized by a newish hotel; local preservationists are up in arms over the commercial sullying of a historical artifact.
