The coast north of Gothenburg consists of waterways winding their way past myriad islands, sunken rocks, sounds, inlets, and waterside communities. Away from the coast, the countryside is varied, with forests, mountains, and lakes offering wonderful opportunities for outdoor activities. You can cycle along carefully laid-out tracks, hike the Bohusleden Trail (tourist offices have maps), go fishing, play golf, or take out a canoe.
Many Swedes have summer cottages along the northern coast's chain of islands, which are linked by bridges or short ferry crossings. Train service is possible from Gothenburg through to Uddevalla (which is industrial) and on to Strömstad. Buses also cover the coast, but service is infrequent. It's best to take a driving tour of the coast, following the E6 motorway north from Gothenburg to one of the following destinations.
