Active Pursuits

Boise offers a huge variety of outside activities. Whether you ski, bike, swim, jog, or just like to enjoy the out-of-doors from your favorite sidewalk cafe table, you will find something year-round here.

Twenty-five miles of Greenbelt, mostly paved, have been established along the Boise River and provide recreation for Boiseans and visitors of all ages. The Greenbelt connects most of the city's large downtown parks as well. You can access the Greenbelt from anywhere downtown -- just head for the river.

For slightly more strenuous hiking or biking activity, check out the Ridge to Rivers Trail System (www.ridgetorivers.org) in the foothills above Boise. This 85-mile system has been established by connecting public land and right-of-ways through private property to provide several multiuse nonmotorized trails around the foothills.

While not a big spot for watersports, a Boise tradition is floating the Boise River. You can float on almost anything but tubes, and rafts can be rented at Barber Park (tel. 208/343-6564). Book a guided river tour with Boise River Tours (tel. 208/333-0003; www.boiserivertours.com). The Boise River is also a great place to fish. For fishing information pick up the Idaho Department of Fish & Game's Official Guide to Fishing in Idaho and General Fishing Seasons and Rules in local shops, or contact the department at 600 S. Walnut St., P.O. Box 25, Boise, ID 83707 (tel. 208/334-3700; http://fishandgame.idaho.gov).

Though it doesn't quite have the reputation of other ski areas in the state, Bogus Basin (tel. 800/367-4397 or 208/332-5100; www.bogusbasin.com) is located about a 45-minute drive (16 miles north) from Boise. With 2,600 acres of skiable terrain, 52 runs, and 37 miles of Nordic trails, Bogus offers deep powder, short lift lines, and great night skiing. It's open, on average, for 140 days beginning Thanksgiving Day.
