The basilica dates from the 13th century but has undergone many restorations. It houses the beautifully crafted tomb of St. Domenico, in front of the Cappella della Madonna. The sculptured tomb, known as an area, is a Renaissance masterpiece, a joint enterprise of Niccolò Pisano, Guglielmo (a friar), Niccolò dell'Arca, Alfonso Lombardi, and the young Michelangelo. Observe the gaze and stance of Michelangelo's San Procolo, which appears to be the "rehearsal" for his later David. The choir stalls were carved by Damiano da Bergamo, another friar, in the 16th century.
