In Trinity
A trail system on the Bonavista Peninsula is being created through woodlands and over headlands. The Discovery Trail Tourism Association (tel. 709/466-3845; see above) has been working with other groups to develop and promote hiking trails on the peninsula, and a trail guide is now available.
There is a superb hike about a 15-minute drive south of Trinity, outside the fishing village of New Bonaventure: the Kerley's Harbour Trail, which starts from the end of the parking area adjacent to St. John's Anglican Church; make the first right as you enter New Bonaventure, and then drive uphill to the end of the road. This 2km (1.2-mile) trail -- a grassy lane that winds over rolling hills and past a pristine pond -- requires about 35 minutes of walking, and ends at the abandoned outport of Kerley's Harbour, a well-protected cove flanked by rocky hills and open meadows dotted with fallen homes. Along the waters are remnants of fishing stages, and a new extension trail leads to a resettled community -- in the early 1900s the government moved remote communities to a more central area in order to provide them with better services -- which is no longer inhabited but can still be visited on foot.
