Getting There -- Wiscasset is on Route 1 midway between Bath and Damariscotta. Boothbay Harbor is south of Route 1 on Route 27. Coming from the west, look for signs shortly after crossing the Sheepscot River at Wiscasset.
Visitor Information -- Wiscasset lacks a tourist information booth, but you can get questions answered by calling the Wiscasset Regional Business Association (tel. 207/882-9617). The Boothbay area has three visitor centers in and around town, reflecting the importance of the travel dollars to the region. At the intersection of Routes 1 and 27 is a center that's open May through October and is a good place to stock up on brochures. A mile before you reach the village is the seasonal Boothbay Information Center on your right, open June through October. The year-round Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce (tel. 207/633-2353) is at the intersection of Routes 27 and 96.
Get Your Kicks on Route 1? Umm . . . No. -- While there's a certain retro charm in the idea of traveling Maine on historic Route 1, the reality is quite different. It can be congested and unattractive, and you're not missing anything if you take alternative routes. For memorable explorations, be sure to leave enough time for forays both inland and down the lesser roads along the coast.
