Frommer's Review
An old gray house on a hilltop looming over dated motel buildings may bring to mind the Bates Motel, especially when a full moon is overhead. But get over it. Topside offers spectacular ocean views at a reasonable price from a hilltop compound right in downtown Boothbay. The inn -- a former boarding house for shipyard workers -- features several comfortable rooms, furnished with a somewhat discomfiting mix of antiques and contemporary furniture. At the edge of the inn's lawn are two outbuildings with basic motel units, a bit on the small side, furnished simply with dated paneling and furniture. (You won't find this hotel in House Beautiful.) Rooms 9 and 14 have the best views, but most rooms offer a glimpse of the water, and many have decks or patios. All guests have access to the wonderful lawn and endless views; and the Reed family, which owns and operates the inn, is accommodating and friendly.
