Bora Bora has some of the South Pacific's finest -- and most expensive -- resorts, and it will have a few more of them by the time you get here. Soon to join the fray is the St. Regis Resort Bora Bora (www.starwoodspacollection.com) and the Four Seasons Bora Bora (www.fourseasons.com), both on the eastern motus. Their bungalows, amenities, and room rates should be over the top.
The luxurious Inter-Continental Resort and Thalasso Spa Bora Bora (tel. 800/327-0200 or 60.49.00; www.boraboraspa.interconti.com), on Motu Piti Aau off the eastern side of the main island, opened just before press time. Its 80 suite-size bungalows, all built over the lagoon, feature such modern amenities as high-speed Internet access and flat-screen TVs. The resort is the world's first to be entirely air-conditioned using cold seawater pumped from 2,500 feet down in the ocean. The saltwater is reheated for the Thalasso Spa's large swimming pool and unique treatments, some dispensed in overwater rooms with glass floors for fish-viewing. Even the wedding chapel is over the water.
