Frommer's Review

This venerable institution opened in 1961, but lost some of its Polynesian character a few years ago when the luxury-laden Amanresorts put more of an Asian imprint on the property. The thatch-roofed central building has always been a key part of the resort's charm, and it still sits atop Point Raititi, a low headland overlooking the start of magnificent Matira Beach. Down below, one of the few real beach bars in the South Pacific rests right on those white sands. The comfortable Tahitian-style bungalows sit among the palm trees on the flat shoreline on either side of the headland. On the north, some of the 15 overwater bungalows are actually perched right on the reef's edge, where coral gives way to a deep blue lagoon (snorkeling off their porches is like flying off a canyon wall). A few others enjoy views of Mount Otemanu's tombstone across Povai Bay. Otherwise, the best units here are on the Matira side of the point; they lack the view but share a much better beach and are more likely to be cooled by the trade winds. Most of the bungalows are relatively small compared to Bora Bora's other resorts, but not the hotel's huge L-shaped units known as "premium beach bungalows." Virtual houses, they all have separate bedrooms, and the "garden" versions even have their own small swimming pools, surrounded by rock walls for privacy. Furnishings throughout are top of the line, with some Oriental antique pieces here and there. All units have oak-trimmed, claw-foot bathtubs in addition to showers. Avoid units next to the neighboring round-island road, which can send the noise of innumerable scooters into them at the crack of dawn. Also note that you will find no satisfaction here if you need to splash around in a swimming pool or watch TV in your room. Note: This hotel quotes rates in U.S. currency, not CFP.
