Frommer's Review
Italian movie producer Dino De Laurentis built this resort in 1977 to house star Mia Farrow and the crew working on his box-office bomb Hurricane. Formerly known as the Sofitel Marara Bora Bora, it was closed for almost a year in 2005-06 for an extensive rejuvenation and the addition of a full-service spa. A beehive-shaped thatch roof covers the bar and French and Japanese restaurants, all of which open to a walk-in swimming pool sunken into a deck built over Matira Beach and the lagoon. The resort has the island's largest array of watersports activities, which it shares with the Novotel Bora Bora Beach Resort, its Accor Hotels sibling next door (the toys are available to both guests and nonguests). The overwater bungalows have some of Bora Bora's largest decks, but be sure to ask for a unit away from the nearby round-island road. Facing a curving beach of white sand, the land-based bungalows have views of Raiatea and Tahaa on the horizon. Guests here can dine at the Sofitel Motu , but not partake of the activities there.
