Sofitel Bora Bora Motu Private Island Review

More exclusive and private than its sister property, this intimate, adult-oriented resort sits on a rocky, one-hill motu and is a 3-minute shuttle-boat ride from the Sofitel Bora Bora Marara Resort. Unlike any other Bora Bora resort, this one has a gorgeous, picture-postcard view of Mount Otemanu's tombstone face (most but not all overwater bungalows enjoy the view, so ask for unit no. 138, 129, or 130). Often-steep stone pathways lead up and downhill to the guest bungalows; for this reason, I don't recommend the Motu to travelers with disabilities or anyone who has trouble walking. Most of the luxurious if not overly spacious units are overwater. Those that are ashore extend on stilts from the side of the hill, rendering great lagoon views. The most expensive unit here is a large villa. Several small beaches offer hammocks and easy chairs, and one has a shower mounted on a tree. Guests here can take the free on-demand shuttle boat and use all of the facilities over there. Sofitel Bora Bora Marara Resort guests, on the other hand, are allowed out here only for lunch and dinner. Note: The Sofitel Motu was slated for an overhaul in 2008-09, during which a spa and swimming pool were to be added.

Facilities:
Restaurant; bar; watersports equipment rentals; activities desk; limited room service; massage; laundry service

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
