Frommer's Review
More private retreat than hotel, Mai Moana occupies a tiny flat islet on the northwestern side of the reef. It's the home of Stan Wisnieswski, a Polish-born, Paris-based documentary and advertising filmmaker, poet, journalist, sailor, and avid ham-radio operator who speaks Polish, French, and English. Stan and wife Malgorzata have three thatch-roof bungalows built on stilts near their white-sand beach. You won't be without luxuries here, since each unit has a TV, phone, minibar, double bed, ceiling fan, bathroom with solar-heated shower, and porch with lagoon view. Nearby are a freshwater swimming pool, library, bar, and sea-view dining room, where Malgorzata serves fresh French- and Tahitian-style seafood. Stan turns the island's generator off at 10pm, but batteries charge the bungalow lights during the night. You can rent the entire island, thus ensuring complete privacy, at a surprisingly affordable price. Even if you don't rent the entire motu, Stan permits only six guests here at any one time, and none of them can be under 12 years old.
