Getting There
Bakkagerði is 71km (44 miles) from Egilsstaðir. From the Ring Road, take Route 92 through Egilsstaðir, turn left on Route 93, and turn left again 1km (1/2 mile) later on Route 94, which goes all the way to Bakkagerði. Transportation between Egilsstaðir and Bakkagerði is available in the postal van with Jakob Sigurðsson (tel. 472-9805 or 894-8305; hlid@centrum.is). Tickets are 1,500kr ($24/£12) adults, 1,000kr ($16/£8) seniors, and 500kr ($8/£4) for children 12 and under. Departures are on weekdays only, leaving Bakkagerði at 8am and the Egilsstaðir tourist information office at noon.

Egilsstaðir's tourist information office covers this area and is a good place to buy a map. In Bakkagerði, limited tourist information is available at Alfasteinn and the community center Fjarðarborg (tel. 472-9920; bergrunj@mi.is; Jun-Aug daily 11am-8pm), both of which should stock maps. The best website is www.borgarfjordureystri.is. The essential map Víknaslóðir: Trails of the Deserted Inlets, with trail descriptions in English, was designed by the guide Helgi Arngrímsson (tel. 894-1012; helgima@mi.is); contact him to buy the map in advance of your trip.
