New England's most famous discount retailer opened at Downtown Crossing in 1908. As of this writing, that location -- the only one where the celebrated automatic-markdown pricing policy applies -- was closed for construction. The Back Bay store is many things the original wasn't (well lit and scrubbed clean, just to name two), but I find the merchandise roughly equivalent to the stock at other branches. Still, in this neighborhood, any store that acknowledges the concept of discounts is definitely worth a look.
