You'll find a good selection of comfortable lodgings in Boulder, with a wide range of rates to suit almost every budget. Be aware, though, that the town literally fills up during the popular summer season, making advance reservations essential. It's also almost impossible to find a place to sleep during any major event at the University of Colorado, particularly graduation. Those who do find themselves in Boulder without lodging can check with the Boulder Convention and Visitors Bureau, which keeps track of availability. You can usually find a room in Denver, a half-hour or so away. Rates listed below do not include the 10.25% accommodations tax. Parking is free unless otherwise specified.

Major chains and franchises that provide reasonably priced lodging in Boulder include Best Western Boulder Inn, 770 28th St., Boulder, CO 80303 (tel. 800/223-8469 or 303/449-3800), with rates of $79 to $144 double; Boulder Creek Quality Inn and Suites, 2020 Arapahoe Ave., Boulder, CO 80302 (tel. 888/449-7550 or 303/449-7550; www.qualityinnboulder.com), with rates of $79 to $149 double; and Days Inn, 5397 S. Boulder Rd., Boulder, CO 80303 (tel. 800/329-7466 or 303/499-4422), with rates of $69 to $109 double. Among the nonchains, Boulder University Inn, just south of downtown at 1632 Broadway (tel. 303/417-1700; www.boulderuniversityinn.com), is a solid option, with reasonable double rates of $79 to $119.

Family-Friendly Hotels

Millennium Harvest House -- A good place to stay with the kids, especially in the summer. The Harvest House has a nice swimming pool and lots of nearby green space; it's also next to the Boulder Creek Path and within walking distance of the Crossroads Mall.

Foot of the Mountain Motel -- There's lots of space here where the kids can expend their energy. Across the street is a lovely park with a playground, as well as the Boulder Creek Path.

Boulder Outlook -- At this former "Holidome," kids can use the pool and play inside even when the weather is bad, and the diversions are many (bouldering rocks, game room, dog park).
