Black Cat Review

One of the smallest restaurants in Boulder, the Black Cat is also one of the best. In the intimate space with contrasting walls of cloth, metal, and glass owner-chef Eric Skokan changes the menu nightly, using herbs and vegetables he harvests from his own 10-acre garden in Boulder. Skokan’s zero-inventory approach makes for some of the freshest food on the Front Range, but it’s his creativity that shines through. The menu might include starters like warm mozzarella with rosemary coulis, inventively prepared seafood, garlic-polenta gratin, and anything else that is in season or strikes the kitchen staff’s fancy. One of the few places where the menu might have a “Study of Rabbit” or “Juxtaposition of Duck,” the Black Cat is a restaurant where the proprietor’s passion is visible on every plate. For a special evening, the Black Cat offers a tasting menu for $62 for five courses, $99 with wine pairings; seven-course menus are also available.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
