Frommer's Review
Opened on January 1, 1909, this elegant and historic hotel still has the same Otis elevator that wowed visiting dignitaries that day. The colorful stained-glass ceiling and cantilevered cherrywood staircase are other reminders of days past, along with the rich woodwork of the balusters around the mezzanine and the handsome armchairs and settees in the main-floor lobby. The hotel's Christmas tree, a 28-footer with more than 1,000 white lights, is a Boulder tradition, and the setting for afternoon tea on the mezzanine in December.
Five stories tall and just a block off the Pearl Street Mall, this contemporary of Denver's Brown Palace has 42 original guest rooms, all bright and cozy, individually decorated with panache. Although the rooms are continuously renovated and refurbished, they retain a Victorian flavor, with lush floral wallpapering, custom bedspreads, and furnishings alternately stately and plush. The construction of a spacious North Wing in 1989 almost quadrupled the number of rooms; although these are larger and more typical of a modern hotel, they also embody the early-20th-century theme. All have a few high-tech touches: electronic locks and two-line phones with voice mail; most rooms have refrigerators, and a few have jetted tubs.
