High on the eastern wall of the Adige valley, halfway up the Siusi Alps above the road from Bolzano to Bressanone, lies the Schlern plateau (Sciliar in Italian). Its summertime meadows and forest trails for hiking and mountain biking, modestly decent winter skiing, half-ruined castles, colorful folk festivals, and cute Tirolean villages draw a small clutch of devoted vacationers. It's also got some great hotel deals in a perfect Tirol setting that gets you away from it all, but is still just a half-hour from the large towns down in the valley.
