Introduction to Bregenz

658km (409 miles) W of Vienna; 130km (81 miles) E of Zurich; 11km (7 miles) S of Lindau (Germany)

Bregenz, the capital of Vorarlberg, sits on terraces rising above the water at the eastern end of Bodensee (Lake Constance). Once the Roman town of Brigantium, Bregenz is now a major tourist spot that's both modern and historic. The modern part of town lies along the lake's shore, and the old town rises above it. In summer, the promenade along the Bodensee's shoreline is popular.
