Frommer's Review
Once the Southern Hemisphere's largest whaling station, Tangalooma is the only resort on Moreton Island. Its big attraction is the pod of wild dolphins that visits the jetty each evening. Guests are guaranteed one chance during their visit to hand-feed the dolphins, but you can't swim with or touch them. The feeding is regulated, and your turn is over in a few seconds. Day-trippers can also take part in dolphin feeding for a cost of A$90 (US$72/UK£36) adults and A$50 (US$40/UK£20) children 3 to 14, as part of a day cruise.
Tangalooma is a good base for exploring the island, and a variety of tours are available, among them seasonal (late June to Oct) whale-watching cruises for a rate of A$98 (US$78/UK£39) adults, A$60 (US$48/UK£24) children. A dolphin research center is also based here. In 2002, the resort gained 96 new hotel rooms; 56 modern two-story family villas are only a year or so older. Villas are pricier than regular rooms, and a little farther from the resort facilities. Each has a full kitchen. The new hotel rooms sleep up to four and have such amenities as air-conditioning, minibars, and hair dryers, which the other rooms do not. However, older rooms have kitchenettes. Units in the main resort area sleep four to five people, and each has a private balcony. A general store is on-site.
