The Best Inns and Bed & Breakfasts
West End Guest House (Vancouver; tel. 604/681-2889): This 1906 heritage home is filled with an impressive collection of Victorian antiques. Fresh-baked brownies accompany evening turndown service, and the staff are thoroughly professional.
Andersen House Bed & Breakfast (Victoria; tel. 250/388-4565): Your hosts outfit their venerable 1891 Queen Anne home in only the latest decor, from raku sculptures to carved-wood African masks. Their taste is impeccable -- the old place looks great.
Old Farmhouse B&B (Salt Spring Island; tel. 250/537-4113): The Old Farmhouse is an 1894 farmstead with a newly built guesthouse. The welcome you'll get here is as engaging and genuine as you'll ever receive, and the breakfasts are works of art.
Galiano Oceanfront Inn & Spa (Galiano Island; tel. 877/530-3939): Combine a magical island view, a wonderfully inventive restaurant, a full-service spa, plus luxury-level rooms, and you get this very handsome inn. Flanked by gardens and filled with major Northwest Native art, the Galiano Inn wears its high style very comfortably.
Woodstone Country Inn (Galiano Island; tel. 888/339-2022): The quintessential small country inn, Woodstone combines a marvelous edge-of-the-forest ambience with fine folk art and sculpture. The elegant but friendly atmosphere here is like staying with friends who are great cooks and who have great taste.
Oceanwood Country Inn (Mayne Island; tel. 250/539-5074): Overlooking Navy Channel, this inn offers top-notch lodgings and fine dining in one of the most extravagantly scenic locations on the west coast. Admirably, the inn maintains an array of prices that range from affordable and cozy garden-view rooms to luxury-level suites that open onto hot-tub decks and hundred-mile views.
Fairburn Farm Culinary Retreat & Guesthouse (Duncan; tel. 250/746-4637): This rambling farmhouse B&B sits amid some of the most bountiful farmland in Canada -- so start cooking. This unusual operation is part culinary school, part country inn, and part pilgrimage site for Slow Food-movement devotees. Come here to learn more about regional foods and wines, and stay for the terroir.
Otella's Wine Country Inn (Kelowna; tel. 888/858-8596): High in the hills above Kelowna, Otella's is a discreetly elegant small B&B that focuses on fine art, fine furniture, and restrained good taste. Food and wine lovers take note: Your hosts are very knowledgeable about the local wine and restaurant scene, and your breakfasts here, prepared by the chef-owner, will be the perfect start to a day seeking sun and fine wine in the Okanagan.
Mulvehill Creek Wilderness Inn and Bed & Breakfast (Revelstoke; tel. 877/837-8649): Equidistant to a waterfall and Arrow Lake, this remote inn in the forest has everything going for it: nicely decorated rooms with locally made pine furniture, a beautiful lounge with fireplace, decks to observe the hens and the garden (each of which does its bit for breakfast), and gracious hosts who exemplify Swiss hospitality. Swimming, boating, fishing -- it's all here.
Vagabond Lodge (Golden; tel. 866/944-2622): Right at the base of the lifts at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, this log lodge is more of a small boutique hotel, except with lots of Western-style friendliness. With log-built furniture and an enormous stone fireplace, the Vagabond looks right out of a North Woods fantasy, except for the fastidious level of comfort in the guest rooms.
